Codenames

Codenames cards. Image held within the Made Before AI archive. JIP CC

Overview

Released in 2015, Codenames distilled the art of communication into a battle of intuition and association. Two teams compete to uncover hidden words based on cryptic clues from their Spymaster, testing how far meaning can stretch before it snaps. Beneath its lighthearted surface lies a profound exercise in human connection how we share thought, sense pattern, and leap between ideas without a single wire between us.

Objective

Players divide into two teams. Each Spymaster gives one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the table. Teammates must guess which belong to their side while avoiding those of the enemy and especially the assassin word that ends the game. Every clue is a bridge of thought; every guess a step into another’s mind.

Why It Worked

Because it celebrated the invisible threads of understanding that bind people together. Codenamesturned language into play, revealing how meaning lives between words, not within them. It rewarded empathy, imagination, and the unspoken intelligence that no machine can quite replicate.

Legacy

In an era before artificial intelligence began interpreting human language, Codenames stood as proof that communication is still an art not an algorithm. It reminded us that words are alive, shaped by intuition, trust, and the shared pulse of thought between human minds.
